Tag/Day 0.C vor der/before QUEEN MARY 2 in Jersey City, NJ/New York, NY

 border=0

A Happy New Year. Due to time difference all of us would be quite early awake, so we were happy that close by City Diner was open around the clock. To our surpirse the diner was quite busy at this time. We started with a classical American breakfast.

We walked further towards Liberty State Park. We were surprised: the first steps invited to walk them down in Broadway-style, Lisbon, Portugal and Pizza, what people lost tonight and interesting architecture. The walk in the clear air in the sun was doing well to us.

As we arrived quite early at the Northern part of the Liberty State Park we could take some pictures of the Southern tip of Manhattan, Goldman Sax Tower and the Memorial for the Veterans of the Korea War. We planned this crossing years ago: New York was coverd under a few feet of snow. On the open decks of QM2 they had snowball battles. So we really had luck with the weather.

We need the Liberty Landing Ferry to get on the Southern side of the Liberty State Park which is seperated by the Moris Canal Basin. As they did not react to any e-mails nor phone calls I could not find out if the ferry would run on New Year's Day. But when we arrived and saw on the opposite side that they prepared the ship, we stayed and waited. Alternatively we would have enough time to walk, partly take the tram or called a taxi. I did not now before how the weather would be alike. But post checked: we would have walk the 2 miles as we had enough time. The next time.

 border=0

For 2.00 USD (2017) we were in three minutes on the other side of the canal.

From here you really had a spectacular view to the the skyline of Manhattan. Here you could also see upto Upper West Side.

 border=0

In this part of the park you find the Empty Sky Memorial which shows from the New Jersey point of view to remember the incidents of 09/11/2001. Next to this you find the former terminal of Central Railroad of New Jersey. Until 1967 the commuter trains from the South arrived and you changed for the Manhattan bound ferries. In the former ticket sales booths of the railways you find today Statue Cruises which runs the ferry service to Ellis Island and to the Statue of Liberty. I bought the tickets before in the internet and printed them out at home. Unfortunatley the boats leaving from New Jersey side do not go very often but from the New York side. But the queueing line in front of the security check was not as long as the one on New York side as you can see later. For me visiting of the Statue of Liberty was like a time voyage: then I was student, then everything was relaxed in the US, then you could easily get there upto. For many years the access to the Statue of Liberty was closed so that I was very happy to get there again. I booked tickets to get into the Statue of Liberty - not just for the visit of the island. Only for the crown I could not get any tickets. They were bookable from mid of January 2017 again.

Like about 25 years ago I arrived on Ellis Island. But then we approched from the New York side.

 border=0

 border=0

If you have no relatives who immigrated at the East Coast between 1892 and 1954, Ellis Island was very impressing but also somehow a little boring too, since you cannot make any personal investigations for relatives.

So it was that none of us could really deal with Ellis Island. We watched at least the movie to get an overview. For the exhibitions none of us was really interested.

 border=0

 border=0

And so we all found ourselves in our caféteria. This painting fascinated me...

I thought it was not really youthful. I a public room. But if you see closer it was youthful.

 border=0

As I did not take attention that only boats from New Jersey were heading on for Liberty of Statue from Ellis Island (obviously they changed the rotation for the New York boats in the last 25 years..) we went first to Manhattan. They allowed us to stay onboard. But from here we could really see how long the queues were at Battery Park. With this weather we enjoyed the sun and the view to the Statue of Liberty.

We were allowed to see the upper part of the pedestial. After anotherr security check. We were allowed to go one by one on that day for free upto to the crown. But it was too much for us after we saw how many steps (162 very steep) it would be. But also here we made a lot of great pictures and selfies of us all. I watched Miss Liberty under her skirt... The way out here was worth the visit.

 border=0

We could not make it on the famous Staten Island Ferry. If your time is limited and you like to have nice pictures of the Statue of Liberty: just take this ferry: free of charge. In my head I always see Harrison Ford and Melanie Griffith in Working Girl and listen to Carly Simon's "Let the River run" if I see the ferry. They made everything new. I had other memories of the ferry terminal...

We had to get for each of us a MetroCard and need to load them. The problem: they had no day passes so we need to pay for each ride and they had no daily cap.

 border=0

I did not take Bus M15 for many years. It was part of the programme to speed up the bus operations "Select Bus Service". Nomally you validate your ticket when you board the bus with the driver. but not with the Select Bus Service: you need to validate at the bus stop your MetroCard and get a receipt for this. As usually here do not look for a button to call for the next stop: check for the yellow wire at the window.

East 1st Street intersection 2nd Avenue we get off.

 border=0

 border=0

Around the corner there is one of the most famous spots of the movie history: Katz Delicatessen. The Pastrami sandwiches: fantastic. More fantastic: Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal in "When Harry Met Sally". I really would have to have lunch with the others here but the queue in front the place was more than one block long.

We went into the next deli short-notice.

 border=0

 border=0

Compared to Katz it was nothing. Quickly we had a bite just at a bus stop.

Naked Juice... unfortunately the wrong one... you need to take this one: man muss den hier nehmen: Naked pressed: cold pressed is important according to Joe Cross. But I did not notice that you had meanwhile two series of Naked available. The squared bottles were unhealthy.

 border=0

 border=0

Let us catch the subway.

We need to head towards Uptown on Subway 2. At 14th Street we need to change.

 border=0

We had to exit at the 50th for the Rockefeller Center. We need to find the Radio City Music Hall. A former movie theater, which was used nowaday as event venue. Here we need to queue up for the security check. That was why we need to be here a little earlier. Inside: no coat check. Was not so common in the US. You had 3-D-glasses. Everyone (but us) took his beverages and popcorn into the venue. First the tickets was 57.00 USD. But just before take-off in Frankfurt I got an upgrade offer: for just 35.00 USD more we could get seats in the center of the orchestra very much in the center. Those tickets were normally upto 250.00 USD.

I watched too many movies: New Year's Eve. There I heared the first time of the Christmas Spectacular of the Rockettes. Legs upto the throat!!! You could only see the show with your open mouth. You had no idea where and what you should see. You get exactly what you paid for. You paid a lot - you got a lot.! Very American. Very impressive. Every cent worth and every minute too which we stayed here. Just simply: wow!!! A must if you can make it in New York. In the summer time you have something comparable like this spectacular.

Ich habe mal wieder zuviel Filme gesehen: "Happy New Year". Sehr amerikanisch. Sehr beeindruckend.

Next movie: 5 to 7: During the story three celebrities appeared on a dinner party, who acted themselves - a so-called cameo: the meanwhile deceased Human Right Activist Julian Bond, the Conductor of the New York Philharmonic Alan Gilbert and the Star Chef Daniel Boulud. When you are already here... after checking the menus we could "only" afford DBGB Kitchen and Bar. It just fit perfectly: Great burgers and hot dogs and created by Daniel Boulud. Everything was very yummy. Especially the starters. Great salad creations. Only sitting was not so nice if you were a party of 5. Alternatively we could see Scott Conant and Todd English.

We need to load money on our MetroCard.

 border=0

 border=0

There were also systems which were more simple to handle but we managed it.

After we did not go for the BallDrop we need to see at least the lights of Broadway around Times Square/42 nd Street. Breathing once the air here around. We felt like in "On The Town" (this You-Tube-trailer of the actual Broadway-version reflected better my actual feeling.): New York, New York - what a helluva town (helluva = Hell of a). It was worth to come by and to see.

Wir fühlen uns wie in "On The Town" (der YouTube-Film der aktuellen Broadway-Version spiegelt mein aktuelles Gefühl wieder.): "New York, New York - what a helluva town (helluva = Hell of a)".

 border=0

With Christoph we need to see Christopher Street.

you cannot transfer here directly to the PATH but you make a fellow-cruise very happy...

 border=0

 border=0

We could not allow to make him happy only by himself... we all wanted to be happy...

So walked through the Christopher Street. But it was not as gay anymore as I remember from earlier days.

 border=0

 border=0

After 3-4 blocks we reached the PATH-station. Was a little hidden. A "hole" in the houses front.

Here we made Christoph another time happy: So in future: A like Alpha, B like Bravo, C like Christoph...

 border=0

In Hoboken we need to change into HBLR. Unfortunately we missed by one minute and need to wait another 18 minutes for the next one because due to a major incident recently the traffic from PATH to HBLR was deviated and they did not adjusted the signpost. Somebody helped us to find the right platform. So we had time to see the illuminated Empire State Building. We were freezing while other showed us walking around with their naked "pork shanks"...

On the HBLR MetroCard was not valid.

 border=0

 border=0

So we need to buy tickets for the ride.

Still no tram available.

 border=0

Gute Nacht.

 border=0

After 15 hours we were all happy that we should be soon back at our hotel. Never got so quickly into a time zone. Everyone went quickly to bed. Good Night.
